The Pilgrims Gather
When April’s gentle rains had softened England’s roads and the hedgerows stirred again with birdsong, travelers from many walks of life found themselves drawn toward Canterbury. Word spread through inns and markets that pilgrimage brought not only blessing but fellowship. Merchants, scholars, laborers, knights, widows, and clergy prepared for the journey, each hoping to honor the shrine of Thomas Becket, whose martyrdom had long inspired devotion.
At the Tabard Inn in Southwark, a company of pilgrims assembled beneath timber beams darkened by years of hearth smoke. Their host, a cheerful and practical man named Harry Bailey, proposed a contest to lighten the miles ahead: each traveler should tell stories along the road, and the best storyteller would earn a supper paid by the others upon their return.
Agreement came quickly, for the road is shorter when laughter accompanies footsteps. Horses were saddled, cloaks adjusted, and morning prayers spoken. Thus began a journey whose tales would outlive the travelers themselves. 🌧️🐎📜
